Hawkesbury OPP Media Release: April 16, 2024
The Hawkesbury Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is encouraging local community members to apply as part-time volunteers for the Auxiliary unit. The OPP is currently accepting applications for an August, 2024 start date.
The Auxiliary unit is made up of dedicated volunteers who work with uniformed officers to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the citizens of Ontario. Currently, the Hawkesbury Detachment has two Auxiliary members.
Some of the Auxiliary duties include:
- Cruiser, boat, snowmobile, and foot patrols
- Assisting with community events
- School visits
- Safety and educational presentations
- Ceremonial duties
- Seatbelt clinics
- Victim assistance
You might notice that the Auxiliary uniform looks slightly than that of a regular OPP officer. Auxiliary members wear light blue shirts, and have a distinct checkered hat. Auxiliary units have no police authority, and rely on the same arrest powers as regular citizens.
To apply for the OPP Auxiliary program, you must meet the following minimum requirements:
- At least 18 years of age
- Canadian citizen or permanent resident
- Grade 12 education
- Class “G” driver’s license with no more than 6 demerit points
- No criminal record
- Pass medical, psychological, security, and financial assessments
Once accepted into the program, all applicants must successfully complete an eight-day Auxiliary Recruit Training Course in Orillia. After graduation, Auxiliary members are required to commit ten hours of patrol, and six hours of training per month.
