The Russell County Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is continuing to investigate a fatal collision.
On April 30, 2024, just before 3:00 p.m., officers, along with the Prescott-Russell Emergency Medical Services (EMS), Russell Township Fire Services, The Nation Fire Department and the OPP’s Traffic Incident Management and Enforcement Team responded t o a collision on the west bound lanes of Highway 417. Initial information indicated that a collision occurred between a transport truck and a car and that they were both engulfed in flames.
Witnesses attempted to remove the occupants from the car but were unable to, due to the intensity of the flames and smoke. The two occupants of the car were pronounced deceased at the scene. The transport driver was not hurt.
Westbound Highway 417 remained closed for several hours, reopening shortly after 1:30 a.m. today.
The OPP is working with the Office of the Chief Coroner to confirm the identity of the deceased individuals.
The investigation is on-going.
